The impeachment trial of former U.S. President Trump is underway.

On January 22, local time, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and Democrat Pelosi said that the impeachment clause accusing Trump of "sedition" will be sent to the Senate for trial on the 25th.

The Senate Majority Leader and Democrat Schumer subsequently spoke in the Senate Chamber and said that the prosecution and defense statements will begin in the week of February 8.

He said that according to Congressional rules, after the impeachment clause is submitted to the Senate, it will trigger the impeachment trial starting at 1 pm the next day, except Sunday.

According to US media reports, Trump is forming a team of defense lawyers.

After the riots in which demonstrators broke into the Capitol on January 6, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives voted on the 13th to pass the impeachment clause against Trump, accusing him of "sedition". At this time, he was only one week away from resigning as President of the United States.

Trump became the first president in American history to be impeached twice by the House of Representatives.

According to the US Constitution, the Senate must have at least two-thirds, or 67 senators, to support it in order to convict Trump.

The US House of Representatives impeached Trump for the first time in December 2019, accusing him of abusing power and obstructing Congress.

In January 2020, the Senate of Congress rejected these two impeachment clauses after the trial.
