Dresden (dpa / sn) - The volleyball women of the Dresdner SC are in the quarter-finals of the European CEV Cup without a fight.

As the five-time German champion announced on Saturday, the Slovenian team from Nova KBM Branik Maribor canceled its participation in the competition at short notice due to positive corona cases.

The team of coach Alexander Waibl will contest the quarter-finals against hosts Galatasaray HDI Istanbul next Wednesday in Istanbul.

The Dresden women had already reached the round of 16 without a fight because of the corona pandemic.

The round of 16 against Maribor was originally planned as part of a four-way tournament on Tuesday in Istanbul.

The winner should then play against Galatasaray a day later for the semi-finals.

The Turkish hosts also made it into the round of the last eight without a round of 16 game because the German Bundesliga club SC Potsdam had also canceled their participation due to the effects of the pandemic.
