Inzell (dpa) - Three men were injured in an avalanche on the Staufenkar in Berchtesgadener Land.

The 33, 25 and 22-year-old ski mountaineers were out on Friday afternoon when they were hit by an avalanche and carried away over a hundred meters, as the Bavarian Red Cross announced.

The approximately 100 meter wide slab of snow had loosened at a height of around 1650 meters.

The men were buried on the surface, but were able to free themselves.

A first aider and the mountain rescue service looked after the climbers, some of whom were seriously injured.

A rescue helicopter then flew them into the valley, where they were taken to the surrounding hospitals.
