Hanover (dpa / lni) - Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) is relying on a broad vaccination campaign as the decisive way out of the Corona crisis.

"The foundation is the vaccination," said Weil on Friday in a government statement in a special session of the state parliament in Hanover.

Despite current supply bottlenecks and a shortage of vaccines, there is the prospect of vaccinating millions of Lower Saxony, especially with the approval of further vaccines.

The federal government wants to enable all people who are capable of vaccination to have a vaccination by mid-year.

"That is ambitious, but we are determined that Lower Saxony will do its part in this project with great commitment," said Weil.

"A vaccinated society no longer needs to be afraid of the virus, and that is our goal."

So far, around 120,000 people have been vaccinated in Lower Saxony.

All home residents and employees should be vaccinated by mid-February, if they can, said Weil.

So far, around 42 percent of residents and employees have been vaccinated.

Lower Saxony has high hopes for the approval of Astrazeneca's vaccine, which is expected at the end of January.

The vaccine can be stored in the refrigerator and vaccinated through the doctor's office, said Weil.

"The faster and the more such a vaccine is available, the faster our entire society will get the virus under control."

With a delivery of the ordered amount of the Astrazeneca vaccine, five million Lower Saxony could be vaccinated.
