Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The United Service Union (Verdi) has asked the state government in North Rhine-Westphalia to reduce daycare operations to real emergency care.

"The situation in many daycare centers is dramatic," warned NRW district manager Gabriele Schmidt on Friday in Düsseldorf.

The decision of the state government to take a separate path causes concern.

This is confirmed by a Verdi survey in which almost 8,000 educators took part.

"Well over half of the respondents no longer feel safe at work," Schmidt stated.

"There is an increased risk of infection in the day-care centers because the employees work in direct physical contact with the children and there are no protection options."

That is a dilemma.

"Avoiding contact is not possible when working with small children."

NRW should no longer ignore the federal-state decision on daycare closings and must leave its "special path".

So far, work in North Rhine-Westphalia has mainly been voluntary and “can rules”, such as reducing the amount of care by ten hours, criticized the union.

"The daycare staff feels abandoned by the state government and deprived of their say."

Instead of a care guarantee for everyone, there must be emergency care based on employer evidence and targeted protection of risk groups.

In NRW, all day-care centers with a reduced scope of care are still open.

However, the parents were appealed to, if possible, to look after their children at home.
