Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The changes caused by the pandemic have given the Baden-Württemberg universities a significant boost, according to the state rectors' conference.

"The corona crisis has caused us to burst a knot in this regard," said Stephan Dabbert, chairman of the conference and rector of the Stuttgart University of Hohenheim, the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" and the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" (Friday).

"Otherwise it would not have been possible in ten years with money and good words."

The state has been investing in the digitization of universities for several years.

Last semester, it approved 40 million euros in emergency aid for corona-related additional needs.

More than 70 million euros were recently decided on further corona aid for universities.

The universities in the southwest receive a large part of these latest funds with 37 million euros.

According to earlier information from Science Minister Theresia Bauer (Greens), the money is earmarked for the digital, for example for IT specialists, hardware, software, licenses.

Above all, Dabbert praised the universities' willingness to take on the challenges of the Corona requirements.

"I'm experiencing a willingness to deal with the subject that didn't exist," he told the newspapers.

"This not only affects teaching, but all aspects of the university."

In his opinion, however, the state's most recent financial aid will not be sufficient for “comprehensive digitization”.

He appealed to the state government to set up a strategic program for several years.

"With 100 million euros per year, the universities could make a big leap forward in digitization," said Dabbert.
