Former US President Trump has begun preparing for impeachment in earnest, including appointing a lawyer to represent him in the Senate impeachment trial, US media reports.

Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who leads the Senate, is known to give him two weeks of preparation.

According to multiple media outlets including The New York Times and Reuters, former President Trump recently appointed South Carolina-based attorney Butch Bowers as the advocate for impeachment.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a close friend, was known to have recommended Barwards, and he was the first to disclose the appointment.

Congressman Graham said Bowers is a "trustworthy man," and he will play a key role in bringing other lawyers to the former President Trump's legal team.

Reuters explained that Bowers is not a nationally known figure.

However, Bows has a history of defending Republican governors in crisis of impeachment.

He was a lawyer in 2009 when then South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford was impeached on a honeymoon with an affair with an infidel, and in 2012 when Governor Nikki Haley was subjected to an ethics investigation.
