The fire in the rubbish dump in Kagghamra in Botkyrka started already in November.

After the emergency extinguishing, the landowner would take over, but according to the municipality, what was needed was not done and it flared up again.

Since the day before Christmas Eve, the fire has been monitored around the clock and the smoke that contains high levels of pollutants has spread in large parts of the southern county.

But the fire has been difficult to extinguish due to the high risk of landslides.

Should the whole mound collapse, it would have major natural consequences because there are sensitive watercourses nearby.

But now the firefighting work is entering into a more active effort, according to Max Ekberg, acting rescue chief at Södertörn's fire protection association.

Long battle against waste storage

The municipality tried to get rid of the business as early as 2015 and a police investigation is underway against the owners of the company that operated the facility for violations of the Environmental Code.

Municipal councilor Ebba Östlin (S) said during a press conference on Friday that she was extremely frustrated that it was so difficult for the municipality to regulate the activities.
