Halle (dpa / sa) - In December 2020, significantly more people died in Saxony-Anhalt than the December average for the past four years.

Preliminary data from the State Statistical Office from Friday showed 31 percent more deaths at the end of the year than the average for the respective December 2016 to 2019. This marks the highest excess mortality in the pandemic year 2020 in Saxony-Anhalt.

In the last calendar week, the rate of 46 percent excess mortality was particularly high.

In the group of 90 to 94 year olds, around 62 percent more people died than in the comparison period.

According to the statistics authority, 80 to 84-year-olds followed with 57 percent.

In the last week of the year, the Stendal district reached its highest level locally with an excess mortality rate of 163 percent.

At the end of the year, the district reported the highest number of corona infections in the state.
