Eichelhardt / Neuwied (dpa / lrs) - Corona masks are in great demand: Some companies from outside the industry are therefore changing saddles and also producing this mouth and nose protection.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, these are, for example, the automotive supplier EPG Pausa in Eichelhardt in the Altenkirchen district and Skylotec in Neuwied, a specialist in fall protection for climbers, arborists and high-rise window cleaners, for example.

The Rhineland-Palatinate Health Minister Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler (SPD), who wanted to visit EPG Pausa GmbH on Friday, welcomed the domestic mask production, which is also from outside the industry: "This shows the innovative strength of these companies in the country."

According to your ministry, there are currently at least six corona mask manufacturers in Rhineland-Palatinate.

According to the Altenkirchen district administration, China’s managing director Wei Hong used her contacts in the People’s Republic of the automotive supplier EPG Pausa to get mask machines from there.

For several weeks now, her Westerwald company has been producing 70,000 non-medical and 300,000 FFP2 masks for adults and children every day.

On Friday EPG Pausa should get the TÜV certificate for it.

The chairman of the Bundestag's health committee, the local CDU member of the Bundestag, Erwin Rüddel, emphasized the importance of these protective devices in a pandemic: “It is important that we become independent of deliveries from abroad with these systemically important products.

A situation of shortage like in the spring must no longer exist. "

According to its own information, the fall protection manufacturer Skylotec produces 10,000 FFP2 masks a day.

Since the latest political decision that simple fabric masks in buses, trains and shops in Germany will no longer be sufficient in the future, "the phone is no longer silent," said a company spokeswoman.

The demand is huge.

For the so-called surgical masks, which are usually cheaper than FFP2 masks, production will therefore be ramped up in February from the current 10 to 20 million pieces a month.

In cooperation with a mechanical engineering company, "the fastest machine in the world" was specially developed for these masks.

According to the spokeswoman, Skylotec is now also certified for mask production after a long wait.
