Berlin (dpa / bb) - A suspect for the right-wing extremist attack series in Berlin-Neukölln has been released from custody.

The district court decided that, as the public prosecutor announced on Friday.

The second suspect is also free, he was never in custody.

Both men had been arrested on strong suspicion just before Christmas.

The investigation and the preparation of an indictment continue.

After the arrest four weeks ago, the public prosecutor wanted to lock both men in custody.

The court rejected this at the time and ordered a so-called exemption from detention.

In both cases the public prosecutor appealed against this.

This meant that one of the men had to go to jail pending the decision.

This man has now been released.

The public prosecutor's office has now also appealed against this court decision to the next higher instance, the higher court.

One of the two men is also being investigated for suspected fraud in connection with Corona emergency aid.

Prerequisites for suspects to come into pre-trial detention before a judgment is made is an urgent suspicion and a reason for detention: risk of flight, risk of repetition or risk of blackout.

The series of attacks involves at least 72 acts such as arson and threats against left-wing politicians and initiatives, especially between 2016 and 2018. The police had long suspected the two men from the right-wing extremist scene arrested in December, but could not prove anything for years .

There were investigation mishaps.

In spring 2019, an investigation team was also used by the police.

Two special investigators have also been working on the files since October 2020.
