The new British variant of the coronavirus has gained a foothold in the Norwegian municipality of Nordre Follo, near the capital Oslo.

The authorities are worried that they do not know how it got there.

- This is the first example of the spread of this virus in Norway where we do not know the route of infection, says Minister of Health Bent Høie to NRK.

At least two people, both over 90 years old and living in a retirement home, must have died with the new virus mutation, which must also have spread to a preschool.

Tough recommendations have now been introduced for residents in the area.

Residents are urged not to leave the municipality and not to hoard supplies.

- Do not travel from the municipality, it is very important.

Everyone who has planned trips to other municipalities should not complete the trip.

It is a strong recommendation from us, says chief physician Kerstin Johnsen Myhrvold, writes NRK.

Tasks: Record-breaking measures are coming

At 09.00 on Saturday, the Norwegian government will hold a press conference due to the development.

According to information to NRK, the government will present new strict restrictions that would mean that preschools and schools will be closed in several in the Follo region - but also in Oslo.

Shops and restaurants can also be closed until the authorities have an overview of the situation.

The measures are described as the most severe in Oslo since the beginning of the pandemic.

- This weekend I want to urge the people of Oslo: Stay at home, meet as few as you can.

Think about an extra time before you go to the store, says Raymond Johansen, chairman of the municipal board in Oslo, to NRK.
