Hanover (dpa / lni) - In the fight against the corona pandemic, Lower Saxony's medical association president Martina Wenker criticized the state government's decision not to completely close primary schools.

"With all understanding for the equality of opportunity and educational equality of children - from a medical point of view the opening of elementary schools in Lower Saxony is not correct," said Wenker of the "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung" (Friday).

"This virus does not tolerate the slightest lessening."

The state government had lifted compulsory attendance at primary schools and in the examination classes of secondary schools.

The range of lessons with half classes remains in the primary schools, however, parents can decide individually what they think is best for their child.

Wenker is also a co-founder of an ethics initiative with the churches, which after the first lockdown in spring 2020 criticized the fact that the educational institutions were closed first.

"I know how difficult it is to weigh up whether you should also close primary schools," said the Chamber President.

"But half measures don't pay off in the fight against such a dangerous disease."

The decision whether a child should go to primary school or not has to be made by politicians.

Wenker said: "We are increasingly concerned about two things: on the one hand, the virus mutations and, on the other hand, the growing number of patients who suffer from protracted consequences even after a minor infection."

The pulmonologist said there was “no reason at all to give the all-clear” despite the slightly decreasing number of infections.
