Mainz (dpa / lrs) - With two newly designed funding programs and 29 million euros from the Corona special fund, the state government wants to support the tourism industry in Rhineland-Palatinate, which has been particularly hard hit by the lockdown.

Private investments and expenditures for public tourism infrastructure are to be promoted, as Minister of Economics Volker Wissing (FDP) announced on Friday.

One program is aimed at hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and campsites, the other at the municipal providers of tourist infrastructure.

The infrastructure program has been simplified according to the information, and the funding rates have increased.

Restaurants and campsites of a certain size have been added to the special hospitality program.

“Our companies and regions are going through the most difficult times imaginable,” said Wissing.

"We want the companies to survive the crisis well and support them in investing in their own future viability."

According to the State Statistical Office, 5.98 million guests visited the state in the period from January to November 2020 - 37 percent less than in the same period of the previous year.

In addition, 17.13 million overnight stays were registered (minus 30 percent).

Due to the travel restrictions introduced at the beginning of November and ongoing as a result of the corona pandemic, overnight stays in Germany are only allowed for necessary and expressly non-tourist purposes.

Long-term camping is also prohibited.
