Osnabrück (dpa / lni) - The German Federal Environment Foundation, Europe's largest environmental foundation, is celebrating its 30th birthday digitally.

The Federal Foundation announced on Friday in Osnabrück that the Vice President of the EU Commission, Frans Timmermans, will be there live at the online festive event.

Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze (SPD) want to send their congratulations via video message.

The German Federal Environment Foundation started its work on March 1, 1991 in Osnabrück.

In autumn 1989 the course was laid for the establishment of a federal environmental foundation.

The then Federal Minister of Finance Theo Waigel (CSU) made the proceeds from the privatization of the federally owned Salzgitter AG available.

It was founded in 1990. Since it began its work in 1991, the foundation has supported more than 10,000 projects with a funding volume of around 1.84 billion euros.

The current foundation capital is 2.32 billion euros.
