Berlin / Schwerin / Rostock (dpa / mv) - The climate activists from Fridays for Future (FFF) protested against the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline in several German cities, including Rostock and Schwerin.

According to the organizers, there were photo and banner campaigns on squares and bridges in at least 13 cities.

In the future, 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be pumped from Russia to Germany every year through the two lines of the Baltic Sea pipeline, each around 1200 kilometers long, which ends at Greifswald.

The nationwide day of action also focused on the general rejection of natural gas as an energy source.

On the Marschall Bridge in Berlin's government district, some young men and women with mouth and nose cover held a banner with the words "Gas is not a bridge technology".

The organizer of the protest on the Schwerin Castle Bridge, Miriam Rakel, said that natural gas from Nord Stream 2 is not needed as a bridge technology, nor is fracking gas from the USA.

She referred to scientists from the organization “Scientists for Future”.

By 2030 it could be possible, with the appropriate commitment of the politicians, to develop the storage technologies in such a way that the energy supply can be largely stable from renewable energies, said Rakel.

The activists called on the Mecklenburg state government to stop the construction of the pipeline immediately and also demanded an end to natural gas production in Lower Saxony.

FFF argues that climate protection should not be misused as an excuse for subsidizing fossil fuels.

"If we want to save our future, gas is no longer an option," said the main organizer Helena Marschall of the German press agency.

If a gas pipeline is built in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, it will also have nationwide effects.

According to the information, only up to five people took part in the actions due to the pandemic.

The minimum distances were observed, said Marschall.
