Rothenburg (dpa / sn) - In East Saxony, there has been a new outbreak of African swine fever outside the previous risk zone.

Affected is a dead wild boar that was found near Rothenburg (Görlitz district) two kilometers west of the airfield.

The Ministry of Health informed on Friday that this was outside the previously endangered area.

Therefore, the previous restriction zones would now have to be expanded.

In addition, the virus has also been detected in a wild boar killed near Skerbersdorf.

This increases the number of confirmed cases of this animal disease in Saxony since the end of October to 19.

"The new find makes our fight against African swine fever more difficult," stated Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD).

Now a mobile electric fence is to be drawn around the site within a radius of two to three kilometers.

"We will quickly adapt the existing endangered area and the buffer zone spatially."

The location is in the previous buffer zone, which is regularly searched for dead animals.

Federal Minister of Agriculture Julia Klöckner (CDU) appealed to the previously affected federal states of Brandenburg and Saxony to protect domestic pigs as best as possible.

"Our goal is to contain the epidemic and prevent it from spreading to the domestic pig population."

The authorities should therefore order pigs to be kept in free-range and free-range facilities.

Pigs are kept free-range in organic farms.
