Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Higher requirements, for example, on protective equipment and disinfection: Emergency services in Rhineland-Palatinate have to work under difficult conditions during the corona pandemic.

The workload has increased, said Christian Görg, board member of the regional association Middle Rhine of the Johanniter on Friday.

The German Red Cross (DRK) also spoke of an increased exposure.

The Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malu Dreyer and Interior Minister Roger Lewentz (both SPD) got an idea of the situation on Friday at the DRK rescue service Rheinhessen-Nahe.

The aid workers have been working under the heavy strain of a pandemic for almost a year, Dreyer said.

They are a solid support “in this situation, which is special for everyone” - this applies, among other things, to operations, but also to vaccinations and corona tests, said Dreyer.

In contrast to the Johanniter, for whom no suspected or infected case has yet been identified in the Middle Rhine Regional Association, the DRK reports a sometimes tense staff situation.

"We are now noticing a higher burden and a higher incidence in the individual rescue services," said Manuel Gonzalez, chairman of the DRK regional association.

According to the information, more than 2000 corona patients have already been cared for by the rescue service in the Rheinhessen rescue service area alone.
