Munich (dpa / lby) - Around two years after the reform initiative Maria 2.0 first made headlines, Munich now also has a group.

"It is not about building a church without men, but rather building a church together," said the spokeswoman for Maria 2.0 Munich, Renate Spannig, at an online meeting on Friday evening.

"Jesus was someone who also worked on power structures."

The aim of the initiative, which almost exclusively includes women, is "a more humane church".

Bavaria was previously considered a blank spot on the Maria 2.0 map.

While the movement was particularly strong elsewhere in Germany - especially in and around Münster - there have so far only been smaller groups in Würzburg and Passau in Bavaria.

According to Spannig, the Munich group has around 40 members.

The initiative advocates a different role for women in the Catholic Church and the fight against outdated and problematic structures.

She also wants to give victims of sexual abuse a voice in the church and works closely with other reform movements such as “We are Church”.

The initiative also places hope on the Synodal Way, the reform process in the Catholic Church, which deals with issues such as the priesthood, the role of women and sexual morality.

The experiences there have so far been somewhat sobering.

One participant said: "It just doesn't rock a lot."

Another complained about her role in her parish: "We can bake cakes and that's it."

The spokesman for the reform movement “We are Church”, Christian Weisner, also emphasized that the disputes over the Synodal Way might have to be tougher and the process itself more transparent.

"After the problems have been swept under the carpet for 40 years, it has to crash."
