Mainz (dpa / lrs) - With contradicting statements, a process for an alleged attack on the banks of the Rhine in the state capital has started before the Mainz district court.

The 38-year-old accused of attempted murder reported Thursday that he had been strangled by the victim.

This, in turn, described the events of one night in October 2019 at the center of the process in a completely different way.

The 43-year-old man said he was hit on the head by the defendant with an iron bar.

The man who appears as a co-plaintiff had come to a clinic with lacerations.

The defendant and co-plaintiff know each other from work and are said to have been neighbors at one point or another.

The 43-year-old said that on the night of the crime, the Turkish accused wanted to rescue a golden statue discovered on the banks of the Rhine with him.

When he bent down, he struck.

According to the defendant, the 43-year-old should have asked him for a conversation on the Rhine.

There was an argument in the course of which the 43-year-old attacked and strangled him.

He did not have an iron bar, nor did he hit it with it.

According to his version, someone else might have done this after they had already escaped.

The process will now continue on February 4th and 17th.
