It called on China to release the arrested persons immediately and urged Europe. The council imposed sanctions on relevant personnel in China and Hong Kong.

What is China's comment?

The spokesperson of the mission to the European Union said that some members of the European Parliament confuse right and wrong, reverse black and white, promote the adoption of so-called resolutions, and grossly interfere in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs. China strongly condemns and firmly opposes it.

The spokesperson said that the Chinese government governs Hong Kong on the basis of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China and the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, not the "Sino-British Joint Declaration". No country or organization has the right to use the "Sino-British Joint Declaration" to interfere in Hong Kong affairs.

Hong Kong's national security laws and regulations govern criminal acts that seriously endanger national security, fill up the legal loopholes in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to maintain national security, and are a major measure to improve the "one country, two systems" system.

The implementation of this law has brought stability to Hong Kong society, the rule of law and justice has been upheld, and the legal rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents have been better protected in a safer environment. This is an objective fact that cannot be denied.

The spokesperson reiterated that China is a country under the rule of law and Hong Kong is a society under the rule of law. Everyone is equal before the law. The basic requirements of the rule of law are that all laws must be followed and violated.

The relevant departments of China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have cracked down on illegal and criminal acts in accordance with the law, safeguarded the rule of law, fairness, and justice, and safeguarded national sovereignty and security. It is unquestionable and indisputable.

Hong Kong affairs, including judicial cases and SAR elections, are purely China's internal affairs, and no foreign government, organization or individual has the right to interfere.

The spokesperson emphasized that we urge the European Parliament to face the reality that Hong Kong has returned to China, abide by international law and basic norms of international relations, abandon double standards, earnestly respect China's sovereignty, respect the rule of law in Hong Kong, and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs in any form.
