When darkness falls, the cleric does not have to be silent, he cannot advance the people in prayer, and in danger he flees, he does not have to turn his gaze away from the injustice of the servants, to be hypocritical to the ruler to ensure his livelihood and the safety of his neck, and this is what the father never did. ”Enrique Angelili ".

Our friend was born to a family of Italian immigrants in Córdoba, Spain, in 1923, and when he was 15, he entered the religious school of Lady Loreto, and later he was sent to Rome to complete his studies. On October 9, 1949, after completing his theological studies, he was appointed a priest from the Catholic Church to start His priestly life.

Returns to Cordoba, Spain, and works in a diocese;

However, he is aligned with the poor, establishing youth movements to support and help them, and focuses his activities on the poor neighborhoods of the city.

Pope John the 23 appointed him as assistant bishop of the diocese of Córdoba on December 12, 1960. The position does not tempt him, does not prevent him from entering into trade union disputes, or deter him from talking with other priests about renewing the Church's discourse in a way that serves the poor and the vulnerable.

In 1965, he finds himself enthusiastic about the ideas of liberation theology, which appeared in Latin America, which called for the Church to side with issues of economic justice, human rights, fair distribution of wealth, and the fight against poverty.

The result, of course, is that he is directly punished, and he is exempt from his church duties, and he is transferred to a monastery in the Spanish capital (Madrid).

He is not deterred by punishment from continuing his attempts to renew the Church's discourse. He participates in the first, third and fourth sessions of the Second Vatican Council during the years 1962, 1964 and 1965, and in 1968, as a continuation of his activities in support of the poor and the social role of the Church, he participates in the meetings of the Priests' Movement for the Third World. By transferring it to Argentina.

At this time, several battles were taking place in Latin America - especially Argentina - at the same time, battles for democracy, battles of priests sympathetic to the poor, and battles for a real renewal of the ecclesiastical discourse, so Argentina was the right place for a priest like "Enrique Angelili".

He begins his work as a bishop of the diocese of "La Rioja" (northwestern Argentina), regardless of the danger that seemed to surround him in a country he does not know well, and he continued his activities in gathering the poor and demanding their rights.

A riotous priest encourages miners, peasants and domestic servants to form unions;

To defend their rights against the exploitation of the state and employers, and establish a number of cooperatives for workers in knitting, baking, repairing watches and making bricks, and supports the demands of farmers for wasteland and work on it, and supports their demands to recover real estate and property seized by their owners by manipulating the debts of the poor.

He hopes to use his good relationship with "Carlos Menem", who was then governor of "La Rioja", and who promised to hand over the looted properties of the poor to the cooperative.

The seventies come, and Argentina is witnessing what was known as the dirty war during the presidency of "Isabel de Perón", arrests, torture and liquidations in the field or in the prisons of leftist opposition, trade unionists, human rights activists and advocates of democracy, or even clerics aligned with the poor who are classified by the government as opponents to the left.

On June 13, 1973, "Angelili" goes to the Argentinian town of "Anilaco" to preside a mass, to be received by a crowd of merchants, landowners and their gangs, including Amadou Menem, brother of the provincial governor, who are trying to assault him;

To intimidate and deter him from plans to help the poor in front of the property owners.

The crowd stormed the church by force, showering stones at it;

But he is rescued, but "Carlos Menem", governor of the region, and in an attempt to calm the crowd and satisfy his brother at the same time, he withdraws his support for cooperative societies, citing that they will lead to social unrest.

"Angelili" condemns the decision, canceling religious ceremonies in the diocese, and declaring a temporary ban from entering the church for the leaders of these crowds of landowners and their men.

They initiate a complaint to the Mother Church, demanding his dismissal. The Vatican sends an investigation committee headed by the priest, "Pedro Arrope," who sympathized with him, and the priest "Vincent Zazbeh", who maintained apparent neutrality.

Things get worse, so "Angelelli" proposes his resignation to the Pope, and asks him to either support him or accept his resignation.

The landowners initiate the formation of a military militia to display its forces inside the town to terrorize the cooperatives and their priests, so all the parish priests sympathize with him, to meet with the priest "Zazbeh" sent from the Pope, and tell him that "the powerful have exploited religion to preserve an unfair and unjust situation for the people," and to benefit from the "work force." Inexpensive, low-paid, "Zazpe" concludes his investigation by sharing the Mass with "Angelili" to express his full support for his pastoral and religious work.

A military coup overthrows Isabel Perón and all the rulers of the provinces;

But our man is restless, and he submits a petition to the new military governor in "La Rioja", General "Osvaldo Battaglia", requesting information about the whereabouts of a priest and activists who have been arrested.

He does not receive any response, so he travels to the Argentine Cordoba to speak to the commander of the Third Corps at that time, one of the most bloody and human rights violators of Argentina's generals, called "Luciano Menendez", so he addresses the father a threat in this short and unfriendly meeting, and our friend realizes that the danger has occurred. Get close to him.

In August 1976, two priests who support the poor are killed in mysterious circumstances in the town of Khumikal. Angelili and Father Arturo Pinto go to the Mass for the souls of the deceased priests.

On the way back, two cars followed them, nervous a little, and decided to continue on their way. The attackers surrounded them, forced them to stop the car and get out of it, and beat them severely, until they lost consciousness.

Until the moment, everything was expected, until Father Pinto woke up to his surprise, Father Angelili lying beside him on the side of the road;

But he is dead, and the attackers fled, palpating him, finding serious injuries on his neck.

The police, who are at the time of the military ruling, release a report stating that Pinto was driving his car when he lost control of it, and it overturned and Angelelli died. Later, Judge Rodolfo Figo supported what was stated in the police report, and a few days later the Attorney General, Martha Guzman Luza, recommended the closure of Case, describing it as a "traffic accident."

Military judgment is dropped in Argentina, all files are opened, and in June 1986 a judge of "La Rioja", called "Aldo Morales", ruled that it was "premeditated murder", it is an advanced step;

But it is without justice.

The armed forces are trying to obstruct the investigation;

But the case is referred to the Supreme Court in Argentina, which in turn sends it to the Federal Court of Cordoba.

In 1990, 3 soldiers are charged with the crime of murder, but the investigations fail to reach a final verdict.

In 2005 the case is reopened, and the former commander "Menendez" is summoned, who is silent. The court does not resolve the case.

Efforts to achieve justice do not stop, until 2014, when General Menendez is finally sentenced, who threatened Angelelli, and two others who were heading the Air Force Base and the Torture Center, with life imprisonment for the murder of Father Angelili. The wronged people rejoice greatly with the verdict and the lesson:

No matter how many years have passed, history will never forget, and the military has no mercy for their crimes.
