Altena (dpa / lnw) - Unknown people disposed of several barrels with probably toxic substances near a dam in Altena in the Sauerland.
The emergency services assumed that it was a matter of highly concentrated hydrochloric acid and caustic sodium hydroxide solution.
The barrels were labeled accordingly, as the police and fire department announced on Thursday.
An analysis must still clarify the exact content, it said.
A small amount of the content had leaked and seeped away, which is why the fire brigade said it wanted to remove the contaminated soil.
The city's public order office and the lower water authority were also on site on Thursday and accompanied the securing and professional disposal of the materials.
The fire brigade said on Thursday that the substances did not reach the Fuelbeck dam: the barrels had been parked well above the water level and about 100 meters away on a forest path.
The police have started an investigation.
She assumes that the barrels were brought into the forest with a pickup truck on Thursday morning.
