Erfurt / Dresden (dpa) - Because of the promised care of elderly and previously ill people with FFP2 masks, the phones are currently running hot at the health insurance companies in Thuringia and Saxony.

The AOKplus and the IKK classic announced on Thursday on request that there is a very high demand from insured persons.

With the AOKplus alone, 1.3 million people in both federal states are entitled to receive the FFP2 masks financed by the federal government, with the exception of the insured's own contribution.

In Thuringia there are around 404,000 insured persons.

An AOK spokeswoman said that 500,000 authorization certificates have been sent in both countries so far.

When the remaining coupons will follow is currently unclear, it said.

So far there is no information from Bundesdruckerei when it can deliver the outstanding authorization certificates.

Bundesdruckerei produces the forgery-proof documents - according to the Federal Ministry of Health for around 34 million people with statutory health insurance nationwide.

The AOK has a total of around 3.4 million insured persons in Thuringia and Saxony.

With the IKK classic, too, the first insured persons in both countries received their entitlement certificates.

These are intended for people at a particularly high risk of serious or fatal disease courses from Covid-19.

This includes people over the age of 60 and people with certain chronic diseases.

The health insurers determine the group of authorized persons from their insured person data.

A contribution of two euros is provided for each six masks.

FFP2 masks are particularly effective at filtering particles out of inhaled or exhaled air, but they also do not offer 100% protection against corona infection.
