Oldenburg (dpa / lni) - According to the Oldenburg energy company EWE, solutions for a climate-friendly and safe power supply are among the results of the enera project.

With the help of digitization, it was possible to use electricity from renewable energies more effectively, EWE announced on Thursday at the end of the four-year project with more than 30 partners.

For example, a platform was tested in the model region that links network and market.

This made it possible to find buyers for excess electricity on site instead of shutting down generating plants such as wind turbines when there is already enough electricity in the grid.

The model region included the districts of Aurich, Friesland and Wittmund as well as the city of Emden.

The project, with a budget of 170 million euros, was funded as an energy transition project by the Federal Ministry of Economics.

According to EWE, the results include building blocks for a digital, transparent and networked energy supply.

"Thanks to enera, network operators can now access a larger, smart set of instruments in order to integrate more renewable energy," said EWE boss Stefan Dohler.

"The extensive digitization demonstrated in our project laid the foundation for new, data-based business models."

EWE Chief Technology Officer Urban Keussen said that energy suppliers would have to break new ground with the energy transition.

The challenge is to sensibly integrate the growing amount of regenerative energy sources into the system while ensuring economic efficiency and security of supply.

During the project, the electricity consumption in more than 700 households and 13 municipalities was precisely measured.

Participants could identify power guzzlers in the house using an app.

Consumption was also evaluated in schools and administration buildings.
