Sources close to the priest explained to EL MUNDO on Wednesday that Rubén Pérez was in a "critical" condition.

He had numerous fractures and a shattered pelvis, he was intubated and the doctors were trying to stabilize him so that he could take him to the operating room.

"Rubén is in the ICU due to the great explosion of the Madrid building and they are going to operate on him now urgently. I lived with him for a year in holy land. Pray for him to come out alive," said one of his friends through Twitter.

Indeed, Rubén would be operated on in La Paz and left the operating room in the late afternoon.

However, he has passed away overnight.

Rubén was initially considered missing, but managed to get out of the demolished building on his own feet.

The 35-year-old Rubén Pérez was ordained a priest on June 20 at the Almudena Cathedral and gave his first mass the following day, precisely in the parish that has exploded.
