Schwerin (dpa / mv) - According to the responsible state ministry, ports and companies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are not directly affected by the new US sanctions against Nord Stream 2.

"There are no direct sanctions against ports or other companies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania," said the Ministry of Infrastructure of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on request.

Due to the corresponding rules in the US sanctions laws, it is assumed that the US government would first consult the federal government if sanctions were imminent for a German company.

"So far we are not aware of such cases."

The Trump administration, which has now been replaced, punished a Russian company on Tuesday and classified its laying ship "Fortuna" as "blocked property".

It was the first time that the US government, based on the sanctions laws against Nord Stream 2, punished a company for participating in the construction of the German-Russian gas pipeline.

The «Fortuna» had left the Wismar harbor last week and was in front of Rostock for the past few days.

Regarding the question of whether the «Fortuna» could continue to call at ports in the country without subjecting these or local companies to possible sanctions, the ministry said that after experience with the previous construction, the lay vessels remained at sea.

Materials such as pipes would come via feeder traffic.

Such pipes for pipeline construction are stored in the port of Mukran on the island of Rügen.

From there it was said that they did not comment on penalties by foreign states.

The port is a neutral and public infrastructure.

"This means that the port is open to everyone within the framework of applicable laws, rules and regulations."
