Berlin (dpa / bb) - More than 33 years after the murder of a Berlin woman in front of her little son, the capital's district court acquitted the accused in a new trial.

The act could not be proven beyond doubt, as the verdict on Thursday said.

The 62-year-old, who was in custody for around two years, was awarded compensation.

The public prosecutor's office, which had demanded a life sentence, has already announced an appeal.

The 62-year-old was found guilty in a first trial in September 2019.

However, the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) overturned the murder conviction on appeal against the defendant and rejected the case for renegotiation.

The 30-year-old was killed in her apartment in Berlin-Neukölln in September 1987.

The police were long in the dark in the case.

At the beginning of 1991 the investigation was stopped.

From 2015, traces found at the crime scene were then checked using new methods.

A DNA trace found on the clothes of those killed led to the German accused in 2018.

After acts of violence in the 1980s, his genetic fingerprint was stored in the database of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).

In his plea, the public prosecutor assumed a murder for low motives.

Because the mother of two, whom he met through an ad, asked for money for sex after a few meetings, he was upset and angry.

However, the court agreed with the defense lawyers' request.
