Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann has defended Baden-Württemberg's special path in education policy.

"Of course, the Chancellor was not pleased with what we are doing now in Baden-Württemberg," said the Green politician on Thursday at a special session of the state parliament with a view to the planned gradual opening of elementary schools and daycare centers from February 1 in the southwest.

Politically, this is not the best time to do it, said Kretschmann.

But in the matter the gradual school opening is justifiable.

Kretschmann sees this approach also covered by the resolution of the federal and state governments, which gives the states leeway in classroom teaching.

People have to trust that politicians will make decisions for factual reasons, not for campaign reasons, said Kretschmann.

Education Minister Susanne Eisenmann (CDU) and he were not far apart in assessing the matter.

He also had no reason to accuse Eisenmann of tactical campaign reasons in their fight for open schools.

Eisenmann had campaigned heavily in recent weeks for the opening of schools - also against Kretschmann's resistance.

Dealing with the schools had caused a long dispute during the discussions between the Prime Minister and Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) on Tuesday.

Merkel in particular had insisted that daycare centers and schools be closed until mid-February.
