Papenburg (dpa / lni) - At the ailing cruise ship builder Meyer-Werft in Papenburg, members of the core workforce demonstrated to keep their jobs.

A union representative spoke of several hundred participants.

"I don't want to be exchanged," the demonstrators called on posters on Thursday.

They fear that many employees with collective agreements will be replaced by cheaper contract workers during the crisis.

The management of the family-run shipyard on the Ems wants to reduce capacity by up to 40 percent due to the standstill of the cruise industry.

This could mean 1800 of a total of 4500 jobs in Papenburg are on the verge.

Talks between management and the works council are currently interrupted.

One will only negotiate again when the threat of eliminating 1,800 jobs is off the table, said a representative of IG Metall.
