- I thought that more people would not be able to afford to keep their horse under the corona, but it has been the other way around, says Vicky Pettersson, riding school manager at Mora Ridklubb.

There is a shortage of horses in Sweden, which makes it difficult for riding schools to find suitable horses for their business.

Fewer foals are born

The shortage is partly due to fewer people covering their mares, ie fewer foals are born.

And it is also expensive to breed horses in Sweden at all costs, such as land and feed.

- In addition, riding school horses must be able to handle many different types of riders, they must be able to handle both experienced and more skilled riders but also be suitable for beginners, she says.

New methods to solve the shortage

To find horses that they need, Mora Ridklubb has had to resort to some new methods.

- You may have to choose horses that you have not chosen otherwise.

Our latest purchase is an Icelandic horse, I would not have bought it if it had been more as usual, says Vicky Pettersson.
