Berlin (dpa) - The companies in the German offshore wind industry complain that the expansion of wind turbines in the German North and Baltic Seas is too hesitant.

According to figures from Deutsche Windguard on Thursday, 32 turbines with an output of 219 megawatts went online for the first time last year.

According to the information, there were still 160 new wind turbines with a capacity of 1.11 gigawatts in 2019.

According to the industry, 1501 offshore wind turbines with a capacity of 7770 megawatts are currently feeding in electricity in the German North and Baltic Seas.

With a view to securing jobs and worries about migration from the German market, the industry is calling for the expansion of facilities to be ramped up in the next five years.

According to current plans, this would only pick up speed again from 2025, and the majority of the new systems will not be built until the end of the decade.

"Due to wrongly set political framework conditions, no new plants could be built in the second half of 2020," says a joint statement by the industry organizations BWE, BWO, VDMA Power Systems, WAB and the Offshore Wind Energy Foundation.

The expansion in 2020 was only 15 percent of the 2017 level.

This year, not a single new offshore system would be added either.

With a view to the federal elections this year, the wind industry is therefore demanding new framework conditions from the next federal government, which should straighten out the expansion timetable and facilitate the construction of new offshore plants.
