January 21, 2021 700 thousand infections and 17,622 deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, from 6.30 yesterday morning to the same time today, were recorded in the world by the authoritative database of Johns Hopkins University with an increase of one hundred thousand infections and 711 deaths compared to the previous 24 hours.

This is the speed at which the Covid-19 pandemic is spreading worldwide.

These are data that obviously cannot be considered one hundred percent accurate given the lack of an international standard on how to detect cases and above all due to the fact that, especially in nations with a "weak" health system, in many cases the positivity they are not intercepted.

However, it is a photograph very close to reality that confirms the moment of global resurgence of the new coronavirus, which has now caused 96 million and 857 thousand infections as well as 2,074,618 victims.

The United States remains by far the most affected nation with over 400 thousand total victims (406,001) out of 24.43 million infections.

In terms of infections, the ranking (limited to the countries that have exceeded two million cases) continues with India (10.61 million), Brazil (8.63) Russia (3.59) and Great Britain (3 , 51) as well as France which in the last few hours has exceeded three million total infections (3,023,661).

Italy (2.41), Spain (2.41) and Turkey (2.40) follow.

The situation changes if we look at the data relating to mortality.

In this case, Brazil ranks second with 212,831 deaths, followed by India with 152,869, Mexico with 144,371, Great Britain (93,496), as well as Italy (83,681).

France (71,792), Russia (66,214), Iran (57,057) and Spain (54,637) still follow.

Things change further if we observe a revealing parameter, namely that of the lethality rate in relation to the population, a ranking where in the last few hours Great Britain has surpassed Italy.

The United Kingdom has in fact come to count 137.83 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants against 137.61 in our country.

Instead, there are 122 in the US, 115 in Spain, 113 in Mexico, 106 in France.

In London, British National Health Service personnel are preparing to transport patients on two buses transformed into ambulances, a sign of the pressure to which the Covid-19 pandemic is putting health services in the capital.

The seats of the single-decker buses have been removed and each vehicle will be able to accommodate up to four stretchers, to relieve the pressure on London's hospitals and ambulance services.

The buses of the Go-Ahead company, which lent them to public health, will have doctors and ICU nurses and volunteers on board.

The four drivers have been vaccinated against the coronavirus and the buses will have monitors and infusion pumps on board, as well as oxygen.

They will initially be used to move convalescent patients from Covid-19 from London hospitals to interim hospitals, such as the Nightingale set up at the ExCeL arena, prior to discharge.

The field hospital reopened last week and is being used for less severe patients.
