Reuters reported that former US President Donald Trump, in his last days at the White House, signed an agreement approving the sale of F-35 fighters to the UAE.

The agency quoted sources familiar with the agreement, on Wednesday, that Trump had agreed to sell 50 F-35 fighters and 18 drones to the Abu Dhabi government.

In turn, President Joe Biden - who took office today - said that he "intends to review the agreement."

One of the sources said that the agreement was signed about an hour before Biden's inauguration.

The agreement gave the UAE an opportunity to accept the schedule for the delivery of combat aircraft, which was subject to negotiation between the two sides, as well as the formal status of the purchase order.

The sources said that the UAE prepared the agreement papers more than a week ago.

She added that the UAE and the United States had hoped one day to finalize the agreement in December, but the timing of the delivery of the planes, their costs, technology, training and other matters linked to the deal prolonged the negotiations.

The sources added that the deadline for delivery of the F-35 fighter jets has not been confirmed yet, but the initial proposal sent by the United States to the UAE was in 2027.

The UAE - an important ally of Washington in the Middle East - has been seeking to buy F-35 fighters for a long time.

According to observers, the normalization agreement with Israel last November opened the way for the UAE to obtain these articles.

The F-35s are a major component of a $ 23 billion deal to sell high-tech weapons produced by General Atomics, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Technologies Corp to the UAE, which was announced this fall.
