• Renzi vs. Renzi opinion

Or

Giuseppe Conte

, or early elections.

After the thunderous farewell to

Matteo Renzi

and his colleagues, the Italian Government sees only two paths: the first, which the Prime Minister spoke about last night with the Head of State,

Sergio Mattarella

, involves an expansion and strengthening of the alliance;

the second, elections towards the end of the spring, something that would be the natural consequence of the failure of plan A.

The Italian prime minister has been trying since yesterday to obtain a stronger majority after passing "in extremis" on Monday a motion in Parliament following the abandonment of the Italia Viva coalition.

Conte, at the forefront of an alliance between the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S), the Democratic Party (PD, center-left) and other small parties of the center and left,

also barely survived Tuesday in a stirred motion in the Senate.

His was a Pyrrhic victory because, although he maintains the absolute majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies, he controls only the simple majority in the Senate after the departure of Renzi's group, and that inevitably weakens his cabinet and complicates his management.

The Government obtained the backing of 156 senators (compared to 140 for the opposition),

which allows it to remain in power

, but not continue without major shocks.

Therefore, the urgent imperative is to expand the weakened majority, which would allow the prime minister to sign a new legislative pact with party leaders.

The intention now is that in the coming weeks the deputies and senators who have come to the aid of the Executive

will join the same group to exercise their support in a solid and united way

.

What if the mission fails?

"We are not afraid of the vote", assures the member of the Democratic Party

Goffredo Bettini

.

Europe backing

Conte met yesterday with the parties that support him in the Government and hours later he went to Mattarella to present the situation.

Meanwhile,

part of the Democratic Party is pressing to seek reconciliation with Renzi

.

Senate Democratic Party leader

Andrea Marcucci

theorizes aloud that "it is impossible to govern in this situation", but Bettini is opposed to sitting at the table with the founder of Italia Viva: "It cannot be ignored."

The Vice Minister of Economy

Antonio Misiani

believes that the birth of a new parliamentary group is necessary, which could "strengthen the political character of the coalition."

Therefore,

the majority needs a "fourth leg"

and it is no coincidence that Conte spoke in his speech to Parliament of the birth of a liberal and moderate zone with a strong Europeanist stamp, capable of welcoming socialists and Catholic centrists and attracting others dissatisfied with Forza Italia.

Meanwhile, Europe is making itself heard to support Conte.

"We are in the middle of a very serious crisis," warns the president of the European Commission,

Ursula von der Leyen

.

And

David Sassoli

, President of Parliament, is optimistic: "Italy will respond with stability and responsibility" to the commitments imposed by the pandemic.
