The Serum Institute of India, considered the largest vaccine manufacturer in the world, suffered

a spectacular fire

this Thursday

that has left at least five dead

, according to the preliminary balance of victims, although in principle it is not expected to affect the production of drugs such as the one developed by the University of Oxford and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca against the coronavirus.

The factory is located in the city of Pune and, according to sources cited by the NDTV chain, the flames have spread through a building under construction.

The authorities have opened an investigation to clarify what happened and determine if these works are precisely the origin of the flames, which have been extinguished in three hours.

The CEO of Serum, Adar Poonawalla, has confirmed on Twitter that "there have been deaths", so he wanted to convey his condolences to the families of the deceased.

The emergency services have located at least five bodies, while they

have rescued several more people

who had been trapped in the building.

He has also clarified that the production of vaccines will not be affected by the fire, since the company has "multiple production centers"

The AstraZeneca vaccine is one of the two that have already been applied in India

, along with Covaxin, developed by researchers from the Asian country.

Indian authorities launched the vaccination campaign on January 16, with a view to immunizing 30 million health and auxiliary workers, although as of Wednesday only some 786,000 had been given doses, according to data from the Health Ministry.

In gross terms, India is the second country in the world with the most cases of coronavirus, only behind the United States.

It officially exceeds 10.6 million positives, although the contagion rate has dropped in recent months and this Thursday the Ministry has reported 15,222 additional cases.

At least 152,869 patients have lost their lives to date.
