Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - In the trial of the murder of the Kassel District President Walter Lübcke, the defense lawyers of the main defendant Stephan Ernst have the floor with their closing lecture.

The 47-year-old German is said to have shot the CDU politician on the terrace of his house in June 2019.

Originally, the pleading was to be made last week, but the closing lecture was postponed due to a renewed entry into the taking of evidence.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office, which is based on a right-wing extremist motive, had applied for life imprisonment for murder in December, stating that the guilt was particularly serious, followed by preventive detention - the highest possible punishment under German criminal law.

Ernst had confessed to the crime before the police and in the trial before the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court, but described several different versions. In the proceedings, Ernst's former work colleague and friend Markus H. is also charged with aiding and abetting. According to the plans, his defense lawyers will plead next Tuesday and the verdict will be announced on January 28th.
