Cologne (dpa) - The Düsseldorfer EG has clearly won the 229th Rheinderby at the Kölner Haien and extended the rival's winless series.

The DEG decided the prestigious clash in the German Ice Hockey League on Thursday with a clear 5: 1 (2: 0, 2: 0, 1: 1) and is in third place in the northern group with seven successes after nine games.

The Kölner Haie are only sixth after their sixth defeat in a row.

In front of empty stands in Cologne, the guests took an early lead through Jerome Flaake after 59 seconds.

Mathias From (20th), again Flaake (22nd) and Kyle Cumiskey (33rd) increased to 4: 0 and ensured a quick preliminary decision.

Moritz Müller was able to shorten it to 1: 4 for the hosts (48th), before Alexander Ehl made the final score 5: 1 six minutes before the end.
