On Wednesday, the highest daily death toll to date was reported during the pandemic, with 1,820 deaths reported in the UK.

- It is a war zone in healthcare, intensive care nurses suffer from post-traumatic stress, says Anna-Maja Persson in Aktuellt.

Fines for house parties

For the third time, there is a closure in the UK, with few opportunities to move outside the home if it is not for daily training or to shop for necessities.

On Thursday, Interior Minister Priti Patel announced new fines for those who choose to participate in home parties.

- Here, there is no doubt at all that it is the British virus mutation that drives the infection.

Researchers believe that this virus strain spreads faster even if it is not more deadly, says Persson.

No reduction in the spread of infection

A study from Imperial College reported on Thursday shows worrying trends.

Despite the shutdown, there are no signs of a declining spread of infection.

The study, which was conducted between 6 and 15 January, indicates that one in 63 people in England was infected.

The worst situation was in London - where one in 36 was infected.

- On the contrary, something has risen, this is something that worries the government immensely, says SVT's correspondent.
