Mail left in the Oval Office for his successor is an American tradition.

"This makes us guardians of democratic institutions and traditions such as the rule of law, the separation of powers, the protection of civil rights for which our ancestors fought," he added.

Trump wished Biden "good luck"

On Wednesday, the Presidential Marine One helicopter carrying Donald and Melania Trump flew shortly after 8.15 a.m. (2.15 p.m. in France) from the gardens of the White House.

Speaking just a few words, the outgoing president referred to a "fantastic four-year" term, representing "the honor of a lifetime".

Donald Trump wished "good luck" to his Democratic successor.

"I will come back one way or another," promised the Republican billionaire, greeting a small crowd of supporters who came to greet him.

On the last day of his tenure, he expressed his gratitude after "four extraordinary years" in the White House.
