Hamburg (AP) - A 52-year-old preventive detainee who had not returned from an exit to the Fuhlsbüttel correctional facility has been caught.

He was arrested on Wednesday evening in Barsbüttel near Hamburg (Stormarn district), said a police spokesman.

It was initially unclear how the police became aware of the man's whereabouts and whether he had meanwhile been taken back to the prison.

The «picture» had initially reported.

The man was allowed to go out for several hours and unaccompanied for last Saturday to visit a family member.

When he did not return at the appointed time, the institution contacted a family member.

He said the 52-year-old had been taken to hospital for a medical emergency.

However, since this could not be confirmed, an immediate manhunt was initiated.

The 52-year-old with a criminal record was sentenced in 2008 to five and a half years in prison with subsequent preventive detention in several cases for robbery and extortion.

In the past few months he had been prepared for a possible discharge and had taken more than 40 unaccompanied outings.

In 2017, he had not returned from going to a therapist and was arrested three days later.
