Flensburg (dpa / lno) - Circle runner Jacob Heinl from the handball Bundesliga club SG Flensburg-Handewitt will be operated on his right knee this week.

As the club announced on Wednesday, meniscus and cartilage damage are to be repaired.

The injury results from the consequences of a torn inner ligament that Heinl sustained in preparation for the season.

"This new operation is a setback for him personally, but it is indispensable due to his complaints," said SG trainer Maik Machulla: "We will only know to what extent this diagnosis sets us back as a team after the outcome of the operation."

After the World Cup break, Flensburg will have to compete in the Champions League at HC Brest in Belarus on February 4th.

Three days later, the Bundesliga home game against SC Magdeburg is on the program.
