Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - After two years, Saarland is handing over the chairmanship in the Greater Region to the Eastern French region of Grand Est.

To this end, the heads of government of the partner regions are connecting digitally to a video summit: The motto of the summit is "Together we are stronger - further intensify regional cooperation in the crisis", as announced by the Ministry of Finance and Europe in Saarbrücken.

At a digital press conference, the Saarlanders want to take stock of their two-year presidency and present a joint declaration.

In addition, the Grand Est region will present its plans for 2021 and 2022, the ministry said.

Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Luxembourg, Grand Est, the German-speaking community of Belgium and Wallonia belong to the international greater region with almost twelve million inhabitants.

Around 230,000 commuters cross national borders in the area every day in non-Corona times to go about their work.
