Munich (dpa) - Without a coordinated corona policy with neighboring European countries, Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder considers border controls to be inevitable.

"If that doesn't work, border controls are absolutely necessary," said the CSU boss on Wednesday after a meeting of the Bavarian cabinet in Munich.

But he hoped that the European Council on January 21st could agree on comparable and synchronized measures.

The State Chancellery announced that it was important to avoid entering Germany as much as possible and to recognize it early because of the newly emerged "worrying virus mutations from Great Britain and South Africa".

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) declared on Tuesday evening in Berlin that in the worst case, she would not rule out border controls in order to prevent virus mutations from being entered. In the areas of origin of mutations such as Great Britain, one must be particularly strict with regard to entry, stressed Merkel.
