Joe Biden, who will be the 46th President of the United States, swore with his hand on the Bible to faithfully exercise his office and to maintain, protect and defend the United States Constitution to the best of his ability.

The traditional installation ceremony was held in front of the Capitol in Washington, in front of, among others, the former presidents Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton.

However, the ceremony has been surrounded by rigorous security measures after the security crash on January 6 when crowds stormed and entered the Congress House.

Five people died and elected representatives were forced to flee then.

Kamala Harris USA's first female vice president

Just before Joe Biden was sworn in, Vice President Kamala Harris took the oath of office.

She thus became the first female and black vice president of the United States ever.

Donald Trump boycotted the ceremony

Donald Trump chose not to attend the ceremony and thus became the first outgoing president in over 150 years not to attend the installation of his successor.

However, his vice president Mike Pence was present.

Trump left the White House for the last time on Wednesday afternoon and was flown by helicopter to an air base in Maryland where he gave a speech to about a hundred supporters.

In his speech, he wished the new administration good luck, but did not mention Joe Biden or Kamala Harris by name.

According to American media, however, Trump is said to have left a letter to Biden in the Oval Office, which is a tradition that the president makes his successor.
