Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Inflation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania remained negative in December.

The annual rate of inflation remained at minus 0.8 percent, according to data from the State Statistical Office on Wednesday.

Since July 2020, the price level has been below that of the respective month of the previous year.

That means people have to spend less money on a living.

Decisive for the year-on-year price decline was the sharp fall in energy prices in December.

Fuels were on average 14 percent cheaper than in December 2019, heating oil even 22.3 percent, but gas only 1.4 percent.

In contrast, food prices rose by 1.4 percent.

The medium-term inflation target of the European Central Bank (ECB) of just under two percent is again clearly missed.

This rate has not been achieved sustainably in Europe for a long time either.

For this reason, and because of the Corona crisis, the central bank loosened its monetary policy several times over the past year.

This Thursday, the ECB should confirm its ultra-loose policy.
