Leipzig (dpa / sn) - The Leipzig city council meets digitally for the first time this Wednesday because of the corona pandemic.

The council members are interconnected via video conference and can also take decisions.

Leipzig is the first municipality in Saxony that has received permission for a video session from the state management, as the supervisory authority announced.

A tool enables not only open, but also secret votes.

Only elections and resolutions on the budget charter are not possible via video switch.

The Saxon state parliament laid the foundation for digital meetings in December.

The municipal code was changed in such a way that “in the event of an epidemic of national importance”, meetings can also be held via video link.

Other federal states have also issued such special regulations.

According to the state directorate, video conferences should remain exceptions.

Approval must be requested for each meeting.

In the case of smaller municipalities belonging to the district, the district offices are responsible for the permits.

The city of Dresden has now applied for its advisory board for people with disabilities to be allowed to hold hybrid meetings - that is, partly with members in the meeting room and partly with connected members.

The Leipzig city council moved from the town hall to the larger congress hall last year because of the corona pandemic.

The December meeting was then canceled as a face-to-face event.

Instead, there was a digital exchange, but only with urgent decisions by the mayor.

On this Wednesday from 2 p.m. the video session will, among other things, deal with the city's taxi tariff regulations.
