Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The delivery delays at the manufacturer Biontech affect 100,000 vaccination doses in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) said in the state parliament's health committee on Wednesday that the country would receive this number in the remaining ten days in January less than had been firmly promised by Biontech.

He is assuming that the other Biontech vaccine can be awarded in the first week of February for other initial vaccinations in old people's homes and for employees of the hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Against the background, the first vaccinations of the over-80-year-olds who live at home could only start on February 8 and not as originally planned on February 1 in the 53 vaccination centers.

The effects of the delivery difficulties are less severe in NRW than in other federal states.

Laumann emphasized that no appointments had yet been made for those over 80 years of age living in their own household that would have to be canceled and reassigned.

Appointments will start as planned on January 25th.

Appointments should be set in the system for eight weeks.

The first vaccinations in the nursing homes with the Biontech vaccine went on without interruption because the second dose had been put back.

The vaccine from Moderna cannot compensate for Biontech's delivery problems: After the first tranche of 13,000 doses, another 19,000 doses from Moderna are expected in the next week.

To avoid confusion, the Moderna vaccine will only be given to employees in the university clinics.

"The amount of the vaccine determines the pace," Laumann emphasized.

There was no change in the vaccination strategy.

The vaccination readiness is greater than expected at the end of last year.
