  • The experiment consists of modifying the entrances to buildings where regular occupations are observed, generally related to traffic.

  • In particular, entry locks and privacy screens are added.

  • The test has already been carried out at Dervallières and at Breil-Malville.

The murder of a 15-year-old teenager in Les Dervallières, the victim of gunfire on January 11 at the foot of an HLM building, highlighted the exasperation of the inhabitants of this working-class district of Nantes in the face of drug trafficking.

They denounce the occupations of halls, damage to equipment, letterbox hijacking, and, more generally, the feeling of insecurity in the face of the recurring presence of dealers in the common areas of their buildings.

"There are six or seven stairwells where people live very badly in Les Dervallières," confirms Ali Rebouh, district deputy at Nantes town hall.

Hall occupations are horrible to live with, they generate nuisances or even worse, sometimes gunshots.

The situation is not new and concerns other districts of the metropolis, as well as most of the large French cities.

Double door airlock, privacy screen, jammers ...

Regularly questioned on this subject by tenants, the social landlord Nantes Métropole Habitat has decided in recent months to conduct, in collaboration with specialized architects, an experiment based on technical improvements.

Airlock with double doors (one opens when the other is closed) are thus proposed to slow down comings and goings in certain halls, as is the replacement of glass walls with privacy screens to avoid observations towards the street.

Modification of entrances, relocation of letter boxes and securing access to technical rooms are also suggested.

It is also a question of localized wave jammers to make telephone communications inoperative.

“There is no standard answer.

This is on a case-by-case basis depending on the configuration of the premises or the issues, ”explains Nantes Métropole Habitat.

"The device has deported the problem"

Two devices of this type have recently been installed in the Dervallières and Breil-Malville districts.

The work took place over a single day in order to avoid the risk of site disturbance.

Other buildings and other Nantes neighborhoods should follow.

“We will evaluate the results.

Like any experiment, we cannot guarantee that it will really work over time, ”commented on Nantes Métropole Habitat.

"In Dervallières, the device has shown its effectiveness but it seems that it has deported the problem", adds Deputy Mayor Ali Rebouh.

Nantes Métropole Habitat reminds that the fight against deal points is neither its primary objective, nor its competence.

This mission “comes under the national police”.

“Our goal is to try to provide a more respectful and peaceful living environment for our tenants.

It is for them that we act ”, specifies the social landlord.
