Former US President Donald Trump left the White House for his residence in Florida after the end of his term, hours before the end of his presidential term.

Joe Biden - the 46th president - will take over the White House after his inauguration and taking the oath on Wednesday.

Trump spoke briefly of a "wonderful 4-year" mandate that represents the "honor of a lifetime."

"I want to say goodbye, but I hope it will not be for long, and we will meet again," he said before leaving for Florida.

In a speech to his supporters, he added, "What we have achieved was excellent by all standards. We have rebuilt the American army."

"We cared about veterans who were suffering bad treatment before," he said. He also confirmed that he had developed the army, and warned the Americans that the new authority would raise taxes on them.

Al Jazeera correspondent Fadi Mansour from the White House said that the Marine One helicopter did not initially take the usual route to Andrews Military Base, but rather flew over the White House and near the Capitol building, then returned to head towards Andrews Base.

As Trump leaves the White House, a small group of Japanese admirers of Donald Trump took to the streets of Tokyo on Wednesday, chanting supportive chants hours before his successor, Joe Biden, was sworn in.

About 120 people took part in the rally in central Tokyo, and some waved the American and Japanese flags, and waved banners saying that Trump is the "real winner" in the November 3 elections.
